P229's were always an "A" and another letter (i.e. AA, AB, AM, etc...) with AM being the last German prefix used. In the USA, only the frame is required to have a number. I guess the 320 and pistols like it only have it on the chassis or whatever they call the metal part that rides inside the polymer.
